De Nederlands-Zuid-Afrikaanse co-productie The Wound beleeft de wereldpremi\u00e8re op het komende Sundance Festival. Het evenement, dat geldt als een van de belangrijkste Noord-Amerikaanse festivals op dit gebied, vindt van 19 tot en met 29 januari plaatsvindt in Salt Lake City in de Amerikaanse staat Utah.
\nThe Wound vertelt het verhaal van de jeugdige fabrieksarbeider Xolani (muzikant Nakhane Tour\u00e9), die naar het platteland terugkeert om zich met een stel andere tienerjongens ritueel te laten besnijden, maar vervolgens met de stadsbewoners in conflict komt. De Nederlandse cameraman Paul Ozgur die een Gouden Kalf-nominatie kreeg voor Prins, draaide de film.<\/p>\n

\u201cHet verhaal gaat over een belangwekkend onderwerp en twee taboes: besnijdenis en homoseksualiteit\u201d, stellen de makers. Het was erg lastig om het project gefinancierd te krijgen, ook omdat het Zuid Afrikaanse filmfonds het zelf niet wilde financieren. \u201cHet is gelukt omdat diverse Europese partners, waaronder het Nederlands Filmfonds en Hubert Bals Fonds, het lef hadden om zo\u2019n controversi\u00eble film te steunen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emmy Award<\/p>\n

Regisseur John Trengrove, die The Wound maakte, werd geboren in Johannesburg en is afgestudeerd aan de Universiteit van New York. Zijn veelgeprezen miniserie Hopeville kreeg nominaties voor een Rose d\u2019Or en International Emmy Award. De film is in zijn geheel in Zuid-Afrika opgenomen met een uit Xhosa mannen bestaande cast die alleen in dialect spreekt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
